Welcome!

Picture
I finally got my website back!! A blocker was put on it early last week and it took some time for us to get it off so I could have access. But now we are up and running and I am terribly sorry for the inconvenience.

We have a lot going on right now. Students should be working on their Devil's Arithmetic projects at home and we are going to start building book trailers in class tomorrow. We are leaving the Civil War and moving into the turn of the century. Math games are wrapping up as we move into fractions. As we get to the close of the year and the second nine weeks, please make sure projects are being completed and students are studying for tests. Both of these are crucial to their success in fifth grade and skills they will need in middle school.

The Beta Club website is up. You check it out here: Beta Club. We have some exciting things in the work with that and you can stay up to date with that site now.

Also, make sure you check out the AR page. We've already read over 14 million words!!! And we have four millionaires!

I think that covers what's new in fifth grade! Please look around, enjoy, and if you have any questions or comments, please contact me!

Thanks!

Ms. Garner

New Homework Policy at Hannan

Research has suggested that a singificant amount of homework, at the elementary level, does little to increase student achievement. We would like students to use their time at home to play, spend quality time with their families, read for enjoyment, and practice skills that are best attained through interaction with a family member. 20-25 minutes of homework is recommended for fifth grade. I assign a nightly reading log, 8 to 12 math problems, and weekly flashcards for homework. You can find further homework information on the "This Week" page.

Discipline System

Here at Hannan we are using a points based discipline system. The student will receive two warning before losing point, unless it is for an established rule that the student is well aware of. Each child can earn up to 5 points in each of the following six ares: Language Arts; Math; Reading; Social Studies/Science; Specials; Lunch/Recess (this also includes hallway behavior). This gives the student a total of 30 points they can earn every day. I do NOT assign the points for Specials - that is up to the Specials teachers. Conduct grades are assigned according to the number of points a student earns.

  • 27-30 = A
  • 24-26 = B
  • 21-23 = C
  • 20 and below = F
Every night, a conduct point sheet goes home with your child. This must be signed EVERY night and returned to school. I send them home in your child's homework folder. If there is a serious issue, or loss of points, I will hand-write a note to explain your child's points for that particular day. Additionally, within our classroom, we have a colored based behavior system. This enables the student to be responsible for their own grade. The colors are assigned according to the grade they have based on the school's system.
  • A = Green
  • B = Blue
  • C = Yellow
  • F = Red
We also have an incentive program in the class. If a student earns all 30 points for a day, they receive a sticker. At the end of the week if they have earned five stickers, they are able to select a prize from my prize box. If they earn four stickers they receive a piece of candy. Both the color behavior chart as well as the incentives charts are posted for their viewing and for yours if you would like to come and see how your child is doing. Incentive charts will be sent home at the end of each month. If you have any questions about the school's discipline system, or the systems we have in our room, please feel free to contact me and I can further explain them to you.
